Using wall stones in your garden is an excellent method to introduce stability and aesthetic appeal to your garden. Whether constructing a retaining wall, marking a boundary, or building a decorative element, wall stones offer versatility and lasting appeal.
When beginning, select the appropriate stones. Stones such as granite, sandstone, and limestone are popular choices for their earthy look and long-lasting qualities. Alternatively, man-made stones provide a more uniform look and may be simpler to install.
Next, you’ll need to plan your wall’s layout. Determine the walls purposeis it purely decorative, or does it need to retain soil? This will influence the type of foundation you need and the method of stone placement.
For retaining walls, begin with a deep trench and a compacted base. This foundation will prevent shifting over time. During stone placement, make sure to stagger joints, similar to brickwork, to increase stability.
In the case of ornamental walls, you have more flexibility with design. Consider using different sizes and shapes. Dry-stacking, without mortar, gives a rustic look, while mortared walls are more stable and can be built taller.
Finish the wall by capping like it with flat stones or a coping stone. This provides a clean finish and helps protect the wall from weather damage.
