Hi everyone! I can’t figure out how to properly optimize the shift schedule for our company. We use Shifton, but we still can’t achieve the right balance. Maybe someone can tell me what features need to be taken into account when planning and how Shifton helps solve these issues? We have not only regular day shifts, but also night shifts, and it often happens that there are simply not enough people for certain shifts. What do you recommend?

I have been working with https://shifton.com/shift-scheduling for several months now, and I can say that the system as a whole helps a lot to automate the process, but it is important to understand how to properly configure it for the needs of your company. We also had problems with shift balance, especially when it came to night shifts and weekends. Shifton provides two main scheduling options: automatic and manual. If you want to get rid of constant errors and conflicts in the schedule, I recommend starting with the automatic scheduling function. It is very helpful when you need to take into account a large number of employees and their personal preferences for shifts. As for night shifts, the schedule generator for employees allows you to set up rules so that moments when an employee works several night shifts in a row without enough rest are automatically excluded. Of course, the system is not always perfect, and sometimes some moments are not taken into account. But, for example, if you have a group of people who cannot work at night for medical reasons, you can make the system exclude them from night shifts. Another useful feature is that Shifton analyzes data and provides reports on how efficiently resources are used — this will help you identify bottlenecks, such as a shortage of employees on certain days. Don’t forget about the ability to manually adjust the schedule. When automatic scheduling cannot take into account all the nuances, you can make adjustments manually. But it’s important not to forget about the convenience of employees: they can leave their preferences for shifts, and you can make the schedule more flexible, while maintaining a balance. In general, a combination of automatic and manual scheduling is the best option.

I agree that automatic planning is very helpful, especially in large groups. But it is important to always check the settings, because, as our experience has shown, automatic algorithms sometimes do not take into account all local features.
