Out of school and in school mathematical knowledge

This research explores the nature and extent of mathematical knowledge that middle-grade students from urban, low SES backgrounds gain from work-contexts and its implications for school learning of mathematics. A teaching intervention explored the features of mathematical instruction that makes strong connections with out-of-school knowledge and characterized a set of shifts that lead from informal to formal mathematical learning.
