While we’re not saying you need to invest half of your income on a website, you need to at least be prepared to have a website ready. A harsh truth that many traditional business owners are finding out the hard way is that if you don’t have an online presence, you’re just not going to survive. This is even true of small businesses confined to your local area.
small business ownership is not for someone who doesn’t want to sweep the floors or carry out the trash. It is not for someone that wants to go home after their shift and leave business worries on their doorstep. It is not for someone that wants a guaranteed two week uninterrupted vacation each year or a pension or health insurance. It is not for someone who doesn’t possess a little of the dreamer in his soul. To be a successful small business owner, you need to be a romantic pragmatist, with a strong ego who can get out of bed in the morning day after day, week after week and year after year. You need to be self-motivated and confident that whatever happens, you can handle the day’s problems.
I am sure you would want to keep increased sales in your pocket, not the pockets of employees, so, is there any product or service that would add value to what you are doing right now and that which would not require hiring?
That part is totally up to you. However you will want to be sure that the content is decent and something that your readers will want to read. This will keep them coming back. Make sure that the content is written from special keywords that you choose. You will also want to become familiar with SEO which is Search Engine Optimization. SEO will help you to optimize your blog to get a better ranking with the search engines.
Another firm has a completely different take on the subject. They define the term as a business that has less than five hundred employees and generates less than fifty million dollars in revenue. This may seem like a very broad spectrum when trying to pinpoint a description.
You may or may not have the required skills to run your own business. These skills include problem solving, some accounting, decision making, marketing and various other business-related skills. You have to be able to manage a team as well so you can keep track of your employees, or at least the management staff of your business if you have one.
You would be shocked at how many small businesses still don’t have a website that accurately portrays their product or service. Focus on making sure that the content on the website fully supports your brand and your marketing message. Marketing a small business starts with your website as one of your focal points.
If you want to own your own business, you may think that you won’t have to work anymore. But even though you no longer have to work regular hours and there will never be any heavy lifting again, you will still have to do some work. And certain skills are required to do all of these.
From day one you should set aside time on a regular basis for strategic planning. I recommend having a formal planning session. I might be biased, but if you hold at least quarterly preferably monthly board meetings you are forced to do strategic planning. By holding regular board meetings growing a small business will happen. You also gain the advantage of looking critically at your business on a regular basis. Which bring us to the following question.
There are so many small businesses out there. Their marketing, advertising, and copy is bland, boring and ineffective. You, as a marketer and salesperson, know that many of these businesses need your help desperately. You want to help them, you feel compelled to do so. Therefore, how can you simply and effectively sell your services to the small business owner?
